The Office of Inspector General (OIG) has recently issued an “Early Alert” to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and highlighted its findings of nursing home abuse and neglect throughout the United States. The OIG has found that 22% of Medicare beneficiaries experienced adverse incidents during their nursing home stays. In addition, the OIG determined that 69% of these events could have been prevented had the nursing home provided better care. Further, over half of the residents harmed during their nursing home stays required hospital care to treat the adverse event.
