Gloria Single just wants to be with her husband. Gloria, 82, and her husband Bill, 93, have been married for 30 years. They were living in the same nursing home in California, when Gloria was sent to a local hospital for a psychological evaluation without her or her family’s consent. Even though the hospital cleared her for a return to the nursing home that same day, the nursing home refused to re-admit her, even after the State of California ordered the nursing home to do so. Mrs. Single spent the next 3 months in a hospital bed, where she had no activity, stopped talking, and lost her ability to walk. Mrs. Single is another victim of patient-dumping, a practice wherein the nursing home weeds out lower paying residents in favor of residents who will bring higher reimbursement to the facility. The AARP Foundation has brought suit against the nursing home on behalf of Mrs. Single to fight this cruel practice, which puts profits over people.
